DESIGNER

Michelangelo Stanchi was born into a renowned family of jewelers in Valenza, Italy. His maternal grandfather, Oreste Staurino, imported fine gems. His paternal grandfather, Francesco Stanchi, was a jewelry designer of gold whose reputation is legendary. As a child, the elderly women would show Michelangelo their wedding sets created by the members of his family. Jewelry came to represent enduring beauty over the passage of generations. As an adolescent he began apprenticing with his Uncle Gian Luigi, who was a masterfully skilled gold smith. Gian Luigi employed techniques with hand tools that have been handed down through the family. Michelangelo’s designs incorporate contemporary flair into old world techniques. Michelangelo incorporates old world wax carving styles utilizing extremely technical artistry techniques that are increasingly rare. Like his grandfather and uncle, he is revered for his fine gold and exceptional stone setting, as well as his trademark use of elaboratley colored diamonds.

Inspired by the New Mexico landscape, this design is a fusion of Italian traditions with brilliant landscapes of the Southwest. The wavy gold pattern is accented with white and blue diamonds to create an elegant pallet, suggestive of harmony and ease. This ring, exceptional in its craftsmanship and execution, is the expression of the movement of wind, clouds and stars across the sky.

Rings, bracelets, or necklace chains can be resized for free within 30 days of purchase. Simply send back the item with your receipt and a note explaining what you'd like us to alter. Here’s our shipping address.

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

Gemstone Source:

We source our larger diamonds, .25 carats and above, from Canada. Smaller diamonds are recycled. Our sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, and many of our emeralds are traceable to a few specific small-scale mines. We work with a world class gem dealer who has exceptional relationships with the local mining communities. He has even been featured in National Geographic. We’ve known him personally for over twenty years and through him we can offer a solid chain of custody.
