DESIGNER

Katherine Aberle is dedicated to creating designs through form and materials that are both precious and enduring. After receiving a BA from the University of California in Fine Arts, Katherine became a staff member at the highly prestigious Gemological Institute of America. During her 10 years at GIA, she taught design and developed new classes for the Institute's curriculum. She enjoys design and the creation of jewelry because of its importance in celebrating life's many rites of passage, such as marriage, anniversaries, or the birth of a child. Her most recent inspirations come from various Celtic, Greek and Native American cultures patterns, which she has integrated into her stylistically unique "intaglio" wedding bands. The basic symbols and shapes originate from many cultures and ages, and are gathered from a diverstiy of items; such as fabric borders, book ornamentation and ancient armor.

SYMBOLIC MEANING

Tides

Poets have often viewed the ocean as a metaphor for the emotions, and by extension, the vast potential of love in the heart. This motif features a wavy swirl that represents the pattern of water and the tides, for our lives are always in some flux, ever influenced by the cyclical movements in our environment. Here, the patterned ebb and flow, or rise and fall, is cohesively aesthetic, mimicking the great beauty of the natural world.

Rings, bracelets, or necklace chains can be resized for free within 30 days of purchase. Simply send back the item with your receipt and a note explaining what you'd like us to alter. Here’s our shipping address.

ETHICAL SOURCING

Accent Gemstones: Diamond

Our accent diamonds either come from certified recycled sources, or are lab grown. We source our accent sapphires from companies that have a traceable and transparent supply chain. Most other accent gems are purchased on the open market, and are not available from sources that we can trace all the way back to the mine. If you want more information on a specific gemstone, contact us.

Metal Source: Platinum

This design only uses precious metal that is certified as recycled, by a third party. This metal comes from a variety of industrial sources. Once refined, it has the exact same composition as a precious metal that was mined directly from the Earth.

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

Comfort Fit is a descriptive term that describes the curvature of the inside surface of these rings. While many rings are flat on the interior surface, the center of a Comfort Fit interior surface is convex. That convex surface is what primarily touches the flesh of your finger. The Comfort Fit ring's outer edges are slightly wider than the center and therefore has less contact with your skin. Making it a more comfortable fit.

The sizing band is on the palm side, hidden from view, where the ring narrows.

As shown above, the motif ends in horizontal lines, which can be adjusted without altering the pattern should you gain or lose weight during your marriage.

Antiquing: This ring can be Antiqued Details

Antiquing darkens the negative space between the motifs. It's done using an enamel process. The overall effect is to highlight the actual design.

It is simple but really beautiful. It fits my taste and active lifestyle perfectly. I had 3mm sapphire stones I wanted for an eternity band....so the fabulous folks at RJ tweaked this ring design slimmer and kept to 4mm total width. This ring is simply perfect with my sapphire engagement ring (also created at RJ)....now I have a Fair Trade, perfectly wonderful wedding set!
