DESIGNER

Paulina Ramirez is an international jewelry designer, having studied art in a wide range of cultural milieus. She was born in Santiago, Chile, where she worked at a young age under the tutelage of some of the most famous Chilean jewelers. Early on she developed a reputation for her refined and exquisite metal work. She works with bold and dramatic lines, creating both abstract and pictorial motifs that are rooted in both her tribal and Spanish South American roots. In many of her designs, you can see the influence of the land and cultural fusion, where craftsmanship and tradition meets in a contemporary aesthetic. Over the past several years, her work has taken on a sparsness, perhaps in context to the vast desert landscapes in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico; where she currently produces her designs, and often to the tunes of Leonard Cohen. In addition to her fine career as a jewelry designer, Paulina has a wide variety interests; from politics, art, poetry and music to installation, sculpture and photography. She also teaches yoga and Ayurvedic medicine.

SYMBOLIC MEANING

Petra

This design is based in part on triangular and wave patterns. Triangles are about force, intention and direction. Think of what an arrow does when it cuts through the air. In this case, the intersecting triangular are in balance and flow like the waves of the ocean, symbolizes dynamic creativity and harmony. From a more general perspective, this motif symbolizes the continuity of life, because the knots and the waves go on forever.

Metal Source: Fair Trade Gold & Recycled Silver

This jewelry is made with Fair Trade Gold & recycled sterling silver. The Fair Trade Gold is from certified small-scale mining organizations. “Fair trade” gold is the same gold as “Fairtrade” gold. However, in order to adhere to our licensing agreement with Fairtrade International, we must call it “fair trade” two words. Learn why here. The gold on this piece is not a thin veneer, but a solid piece of gold about the thickness of a credit card that is soldered onto the recycled sterling silver base.

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

Gemstone Source:

We source our larger diamonds, .25 carats and above, from Canada. Smaller diamonds are recycled. Our sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, and many of our emeralds are traceable to a few specific small-scale mines. We work with a world class gem dealer who has exceptional relationships with the local mining communities. He has even been featured in National Geographic. We’ve known him personally for over twenty years and through him we can offer a solid chain of custody. My (now) husband bought this for me as a commitment ring, then it became and engagement ring, and now I wear it as a wedding band. I love it. It is comfortable and beautiful! I had the vertical bars around the stone cut down to the ring size, and really like that modification. I thought of this ring recently, as I was getting my estate stuff in order (now because of coronavirus) and just wrote a description of it for my granddaughter. She was my ring bearer and will get the ring she bore. I liked telling her about the sustainability that is part of your products.
