Your Definitive Guide to Lesbian and Gay Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings

First thing’s first: you’re in love! This is a very exciting time in your life, and we’re happy for you!

We are here to fully support you in this journey, regardless of how you identify or who you love. We want to help make the process of selecting your dream Wedding Ring or Engagement Ring not just easy, but enjoyable.

We are artisan jewelers based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. All of our Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings are handmade by a team with decades of combined experience in old-world artisan techniques.

It’s this artisanal maker approach that sets us apart. While nearly all wedding rings are soullessly printed out from 3D CAD/CAM rendering machines, ours are forged by hand—infused with artisan energy and a tangible love of craft.

As an added bonus, we are an activist jewelry company committed to using the most ethical gold and gems available. We are the only certified Fairtrade Gold jewelers in the US, exclusively use Canadian mined, lab grown, and recycled diamonds, offer a variety of ethically-sourced gemstones, and were even named Santa Fe’s 2019 Green Business of the Year.

We feel wedding rings should be a true expression of the beauty and commitment in your relationship. We specialize in custom design, and if you take a moment to look at our Google reviews you’ll see why we’re in our 25th year of business!

But first, some key details you should consider for your purchase:

Traditions for Lesbian and Gay Engagement Rings

The engagement and wedding planning process is a significant time in your life, and many cultures have their own distinct traditions. You should feel free to participate in whatever way you see fit!

In terms of gay and lesbian engagement rings, the best guidance we can offer is to be on the same page as your partner. Knowing what they want is crucial: e.g. should you plan a surprise engagement, or would they rather you pick the ring out together?

If it’s the former option, the next steps are to figure our your s/o’s ring size, as well as what style they prefer. E.g. do they want a Diamond Engagement Ring, or something “less traditional” such as a Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald Engagement Ring?

Picking out a surprise engagement (or “mangagement”) ring is, in our opinion, particularly thrilling. Imagine, for a moment, the look on their face when you pull out the ring that not only fits them perfectly, but stylistically, is exactly what they would have chosen for themself. You will score romance points that will last well past the honeymoon...maybe even beyond the paper anniversary! Every time they looks at the ring, they will be reminded of the most perfect, romantic moment in their life.

Of course, this option can feel a bit overwhelming at first. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers, or if you have questions—particularly about center stone type! We’ll be happy to talk it through with you over the phone or in person.

Women’s vs Men’s Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings

Please feel free to disregard our heteronormative categorizations! While the products on our site are divided into traditional “Men’s Engagement Rings” and “Women’s Wedding Rings” labels, these are only suggested guidelines based on what we typically see. The way we look at it, if a man is wearing it, it’s a Men’s Engagement Ring or Men’s Wedding Ring—and vice-versa.

As far as we're concerned, these rings would look great on any hand!

If you identify as non-binary or otherwise want to search through our wedding and engagement rings without the feeling of the patriarchy breathing down your neck, check out our All Wedding Rings and All Engagement Rings groupings.

The bottom line: if you like, wear it loud and proud!

Men’s Engagement Rings (or: The Mangagement Ring)

Keeping the above in mind, we do have a category for Men’s Engagement Rings (aka the Management Ring) on our site. This collection, again, contains suggestions based on our experience. But if you’re looking to expand your search, please allow us to again point you to our All Engagement Rings grouping. And, keep in mind that we specialize in Custom Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings, and can create virtually any design you desire. See under the “Custom” header below in this article.

Selecting Precious Metals for Your Lesbian and Gay Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings

When deciding on the precious metal(s) for your wedding band or engagement ring, there are a number of factors to consider.

Are you leaning toward a classic Gold Wedding Ring? If so, would this be a Yellow Gold, White Gold, or Rose Gold Wedding Band? 14K or 18K gold? If you’re not quite sure or would like more info, check out this guide to Gold Weddings Rings.

Do you prefer a White Gold Wedding Ring look? Have you considered Platinum Wedding Rings or Stainless Steel Wedding Rings? If your interest is piqued, check out our short guide on White Metal Wedding Rings.

If you’re most curious about Platinum Engagement Rings vs Palladium Engagement Rings, pop over to this brief piece comparing the two.

At Reflective Jewelry, we like to point our customers to our Two Tone Engagement Rings and Two Tone Wedding Rings. If any of these designs catch your eye, this article contains useful information for your purchase.

Of course, ethical considerations for your Gay or Lesbian Engagement Rings or Wedding Rings should also be a part of your decision process. Which leads us to this:

Ethics of Your Lesbian and Gay Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings: Gold, Diamonds, and Colored Gemstones

We are the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the entire US, use only recycled Sterling Silver, and strive to bring you the most ethically-sourced gemstones available. Our commitment to ethics runs deep—our President Marc Choyt has been an ethical jewelry activist for over 15 years. In late 2018 we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé: Lies, Damn Lies, and Conflict Free Diamondsa 40,000 word open-source eBook that details the current ethical jewelry zeitgeist, what the industry is doing wrong, and what we collectively can do to make things better.

Our Fairtrade Gold landing page contains a wealth of information regarding the benefits of Fairtrade Gold Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings. Perhaps most important, we urge you to consider how Fairtrade Gold Wedding Rings help create a more beautiful world by reducing poverty and exploitation, and lowering global mercury contamination. (Recycled Gold Wedding Rings, though often touted as “ethical,” do not have the same impact on producer communities. We break it down here.)

We source our Fairtrade Gold from Macdesa, a small-scale mine located in Peru.

Diamond sourcing for an Engagement Ring is also a major ethical consideration. While virtually all jewelers offer “conflict free diamonds,” and some even claim to be “beyond conflict free,” the realities are far more complicated than many jewelers would lead you to believe.

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to the most ethical diamond available. At present, the best available options are Canadian Mined Diamonds, Recycled Diamonds, and Lab Grown Diamonds. We give a quick analysis of these three, all of which are available through us, here.

If you’re curious about any aspect of the ethics of our metals or gemstones, please give us a call, email Marc at Marc (at) reflectivejewelry.com, or stop by our studio at 912 Baca St in Santa Fe. We’ll be happy to answer your questions!
