This One-of-a-Kind Ammolite Ravena Ring features as its centerpiece an iridescent Ammolite, with tones ranging from Earthy greens and browns to bright flashes of orange, yellow, and turquoise. This captivating gemstone is notable because it’s one of the few of organic origin—Ammolite is made of fossilized shells! The handmade band of this ring features a simple, tribalistic pattern that complements the stone well.

DESIGNER

Helen Chantler is Reflective Jewelry's Lead Designer, CEO, and founder. Originally from England, Helen spent much of her childhood in Southeast Asia — and has traveled extensively to many countries across the globe. When she eventually landed in Santa Fe, NM in 1986; she began her foray into metalwork as a leather belt-making apprentice. She soon evolved into jewelry-making at the same shop, delving into traditional handmaking techniques of the American southwest.

In Helen's extensive designs, developed over nearly 3 decades, you'll find interwoven inspirations from Helen's Celtic heritage, her fierce connection to Mother Nature, and her deep love of her chosen hometown of Santa Fe. SYMBOLIC MEANING

Ravena

This distinct and organic motif resembles the tip of a plant unfurling, or the meandering path of a river on the way to the sea. Those who are attracted to it love the natural world, and are most at peace with a comfortable with a slow, soulful flow. In this design, the spiral, which has more prominence than the line, represents growth and evolution. The motif shows how the path is not an angular vector toward a goal, but more symbolic, perhaps, of a vine climbing toward the light. The design is approximately 3500 years old, from archeological evidence from Italy, Hungary and Germany.

Metal Source: Fair Trade Gold & Recycled Silver

This jewelry is made with Fair Trade Gold & recycled sterling silver. The Fair Trade Gold is from certified small-scale mining organizations. “Fair trade” gold is the same gold as “Fairtrade” gold. However, in order to adhere to our licensing agreement with Fairtrade International, we must call it “fair trade” two words. Learn why here. The gold on this piece is not a thin veneer, but a solid piece of gold about the thickness of a credit card that is soldered onto the recycled sterling silver base.

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

Gemstone Source:

We source our larger diamonds, .25 carats and above, from Canada. Smaller diamonds are recycled. Our sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, and many of our emeralds are traceable to a few specific small-scale mines. We work with a world class gem dealer who has exceptional relationships with the local mining communities. He has even been featured in National Geographic. We’ve known him personally for over twenty years and through him we can offer a solid chain of custody.
