Making A Fairtrade Gold Wedding Ring By Hand In 11 Steps

Making A Fairtrade Gold Wedding Ring By Hand In 11 Steps

Typically, classic simple wedding bands are mass produced—they are either cast or they are stamped out. Over the last several years, due to the unavailability of Fairtrade Gold rings in the US, we have been making them in our studio, using old world techniques that relatively few jewelers even know how to utilize today.

Below we’ve broken down this process into 11 steps. The end product is a gorgeous 4mm Flat Topped Classic Comfort Fit Wedding Band, pictured below and availabe for sale here.

A simple wedding band like this flat topped comfort fit wedding ring can be made by hand, using Fairtrade Gold, in our small Santa Fe studio.

1. We start out with 24K Fairtrade Gold, which is formed into small grains.

When creating a Fairtrade Gold wedding ring by hand, the first step is to weigh out the 24K gold grain to be used in the ring.

2. This is weighed out in the amount needed for ring.

24K Fairtrade Gold grain being weighed out before it is formed into a wedding ring.

3. The pure gold is mixed with an alloy, to make it either 14K or 18K and a particular color—such as white gold or rose gold.

24K gold must be alloyed before it is formed into a ring. Here, proper alloy is added to create an 18K yellow gold ring.

4. Gold and alloy are then melted down with a torch.

Once properly weighed out, gold and alloy are melted together in the beginning stages of creating a wedding band by hand.

5. Now, we have a round 18K gold nugget.

Here, the gold and alloy have been melted down and formed into an ingot—shown here red-hot.

6. The next step is to roll out the nugget into a wire, using a rolling mill as shown.

This rolling mill takes the gold ingot shown in the picture above and transforms it into gold wire.

7. Here’s what the gold looks like after its gone through the rolling mill.

This gold wire is what emerges from the rolling mill shown in the picture above.

8. The wire is formed into a ring using hand tools.

Once the gold wire is formed, it is shaped using hand tools into a simple wedding ring shape!

9. The ring is shaped using a hammer and a mandrill.

After a basic ring is formed, a hammer and mandrill are used to further shape the Fairtrade Gold wedding band.

10. Then, we polish the gold ring on our polishing wheel.

After the ring is hammered into shape, it is polished on our polishing wheel.

11. And, this is what the ring looks like once it is off the wheel.

Here, the beautiful end product—an 18K Fairtrade Gold comfort fit wedding band!
